Keywords Meta Tag

A list of words that relate to the content of the current webpage.

The keywords meta tag is an obsolete piece of internet history. It is a place where the website creator can put a list of keywords that relate to the current webpage. Search engines can theoretically use this information to determine what the webpage is about and when to show it in search engine results.

<meta name="keywords" content="restaurant, food, dining, pizza, take out, delivery"/>

There are two problems with this meta tag.

  1. Because the keywords can be edited by website creators, it can be abused to list keywords unrelated to the current page.
  2. Poorly configured websites may list incorrect keywords by mistake, or the same keywords for every page on the website.

For these reasons, the keywords meta tag is no longer use by most major search engines, including Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo and Baidu. For over a decade, search engines have determined keywords by analyzing the actual text on the page.

Therefore, we recommend that you remove the keywords meta tag from your website and save a little bit of bandwidth on every loaded page.
